چکیده
B Confirming the diagnosis of night blindness in our patient, the scotopic response in his electroretinogram (ERG) was distinctly reduced while the photopic response was normal. When his blood was examined for a low level of vitamin A as a possible cause for night blindness, we found the value to be reduced below normal (17 pg/dl versus 25-70 pg/dl in normal subjects). Treatment with vitamin A supplement resulted in prompt normalization of vitamin A level (79 pg/dl after two weeks). Symptoms completely disappeared, and the scotopic response in the ERG rehuned to normal.

Morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space
Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...

Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 279: C744–C750, 2000.—The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is an epithelial region of the blood-brain barrier. متن کاملA culture model of development reveals multiple properties of RPE tight junctions.
PURPOSE A culture model was used to examine the development of tight junctions in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). METHODS Chick RPE was isolated on embryonic day 7 (E7), E10 or E14 and cultured on laminin-coated filters. Barrier properties were stimulated with E14 retinal conditioned medium. Morphology was characterized by confocal microscopy. Permeability was determined by measuring th...
متن کاملDifferential regulation of tight junction permeability during development of the retinal pigment epithelium.
The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is an epithelial region of the blood-brain barrier. During embryogenesis, permeability of the barrier gradually decreases. A culture model of RPE development revealed differences in how tight junctions regulate the paracellular diffusion of ionic and nonionic solutes (Ban Y and Rizzolo LJ. Mol Vis 3: 18, 1997). To examine these differences, the permeation of...
متن کاملClaudin-19 and the barrier properties of the human retinal pigment epithelium.
PURPOSE The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) separates photoreceptors from choroidal capillaries, but in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) capillaries breach the RPE barrier. Little is known about human RPE tight junctions or the effects of serum on the retinal side of the RPE. METHODS Cultured human fetal RPE (hfRPE) was assessed by the transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) and th...
